APPLICATIONS - FOYERS AND ENTRIES
Issues on foyers are water and fairly tight confined spaces. Unless the foyer goes unused because everyone comes into the house via the garage, a throw rug will have to be installed in front of the front door to allow visitors to wipe off their wet feet before walking on the tile. Because of the rug, often any design in the foyer floor will be wasted. Accordingly we recommend that designs and medallions not be used unless the foyer is quite large. To open up constricted areas the best approach is to utilize large body tiles set on diagonal. ( See example)
Over the years we have installed a substantial amount of large body tile over old slate foyer applications. After some years the slate became dingy and hard to keep up without sealing. In other instances homeowners make the mistake of waxing the slate to make it look shiny. Unfortunately the just created a textured vinyl like floor that was really hard to keep looking good without stripping and reapplying the wax. Once the new tile was installed over the old slate all of the maintenance problems went away and the foyer looked much larger!
